Abstract

Background: Currently there are 15,941 centenarians in Spain (INE, 2015) more than twice the number than fifteen years ago. This represents 0.03% of the total population. In 2050 it is expected to reach 69,386.

Objectives: To review the most relevant international studies in centenarians, from a biopsychosocial approach, published in scientific journals. Identify the protective factors that centenarians in good physical, cognitive and social functioning have.

Methodology: A literature review was conducted in databases (PsycInfo, PsycCritiques and PsycArticles) of research published in indexed scientific journals specialized in geriatrics and gerontology, research project reports, books of conference proceedings and doctoral theses. Results: The most relevant studies on centenarians were analyzed. In addition to the genetic load, the most researched domains, from a biopsychosocial perspective, were physical and behavioral health, and cognitive, affective-emotional, social-relational and personality functioning. Discussion: We found few studies examining psychosocial variables related to wellness of centenarians as models of successful aging. Among these variables, the role of social relations and social support stands. Study and analysis would be useful to design prevention or intervention programs that would improve the quality of life of older adults. To find what the variables that predict longevity are could help to improve the lifestyles of aging people.
